Approach

Our approach

Our group format is based on Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB), the cutting edge of brain research that has proven itself extremely effective for women in early recovery from addiction who have experienced trauma and have complex issues. We know that the human brain works on a type of default system. What fires together, wires together; and the nature of the brain’s functioning is that if you don’t use it, you will lose it. We must flex new muscles and thinking patterns to replace the old. Basically, the brain continues to do the same thing until it is provided with a different option.

Neuroplasticity research has revealed the brain’s phenomenal ability to be flexible and resilient. We know the importance of laying down new neuro pathways then strengthening them through practice, active engagement, and repetition. Persistence and repetition are critical to developing a new way of thinking and engaging in new behaviors based on that new way of thinking. Eventually, our residents are able to do this without as much panic or fear and the addiction voice becomes less loud. An addicted brain is like a robotic takeover, not allowing the person to be positive or see alternative options on how to think or act.

We must change the negative, hopeless narrative playing in our heads. In turn, it means changing how a resident’s brain functions, how she views herself and her future. This new narrative plays a critical role in ongoing recovery. The activities and meditations we do at Grace House are aimed at changing our savage inner critic. We employ IPNB, sanskrit mantra meditations (see article), these methods and we try to bring new practices to our program all the time!

Additional Resources

The Twelve Steps has been a time-tested and proven process for long-lasting recovery from addiction. The environment at the Grace House is created to enhance the experience of recovery by focusing on step work while giving direct support on how to do it progressively.

Meditation and spiritual practice are fundamental components of the Twelve Step process and we explore many different ways of connecting to our own inner peace. Daily practice is directly attributed to our success.

We practice Non-Violent Communication in our groups which coincides with IPNB and the need to develop healthy communication skills, stimulating neuroplasticity in the pre-frontal cortex, and healing the brain. For more information, please visit:

Heated Vinyasa Flow Yoga is offered by Greener Postures Yoga and included in our monthly fee. Increased energy and stamina; improved muscle tone, digestion, and concentration; and enhanced relaxation and ability to deal with life’s daily stresses are among the benefits of this practice style.
